"Love, Chaos, Kin: A Look at Transracial Adoption"

October 17, 2025

Join us on Monday, November 3rd for the powerful documentary Love Chaos Kin: A Look at Transracial Adoption by award-winning film maker Chithra Jeyaram. In this film, an unexpected pregnancy leads an Indian immigrant mother to help her adopted twin daughters reconnect with their struggling White birth mother and estranged Native American father, forcing her to confront class divides and challenging her daughters’ sense of identity and belonging.

This is a free event at the Main Street Landing Film House in Burlington, Vermont. Registration is required.

While the movie will be shown at 6:30 pm, there will also be related, free, optional, affinity group conversations for adoptees at 5:30 pm. Two simultaneous groups will run at once; one for adopted youth and young adults (ages 16–22), and another for adopted adults (ages 22 and up).

Vermont Child Welfare Training Partnership, Vermont Consortium for Adoption and Guardianship and Main Street Landing have partnered to bring this special film to Vermont.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT & CONTEXT (Chithra Jeyaram): Love, Chaos, Kin emerged from a deeply personal journey. As an Indian immigrant contemplating adoption, I found myself grappling with questions: Can I adopt in America? How do I preserve my language, culture, and religion while raising a child in a culture adjacent to their birth heritage? It fills a critical gap in mainstream adoption narratives. By showcasing the experiences of an Indian immigrant family and their adopted White-passing, Navajo-descent twins, it provides a counter-narrative and visibility to diverse American family dynamics.  It advocates for ethical, trauma-informed adoption practices that prioritize children’s well-being and maintain connections with birth families. This film shows how everyday citizens bridge divides and unite for the children they love and care about.
