A Mindful Moment

Adjusting to Changes

Fall is a clear time of change—we can see it and feel it. It’s easy to tell that some of us, the boot-and-sweater-wearing crowd, are excited to move into this time of crisp air and muted colors, while some of us are slower to catch up, and might still be wearing flip-flops into October. It’s important to recognize that you, and others in your home or your workplace, may have a variety of feelings as the season changes. Change may lead us toward excitement about what’s to come, and it may also make us feel a sense of loss about what we must leave behind.

Take a moment now to notice how you are feeling about the changes in your life—not only the cycles of nature, but any other changes you are experiencing.

Here are a few ways to approach change mindfully:

Try a few cycles of square breathing, which can help you feel grounded and centered in the midst of any changes you may not be able to control. Breathe in to a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of four. Breathe out to a count of four. Wait for a count of four. Repeat this pattern a few times.

Take a walk in nature, or even in your neighborhood. Notice the changes in the trees and the air. Let your imagination roam. Walking is resourcing—it increases bilateral stimulation so that each side of our brain and body integrate with one another. This helps us function better on many levels.
