A Mindful Moment

Turn Toward the Light

Here in Vermont, we’re entering the height of sunflower season. You might notice them in a neighbor’s yard or in a field down the road. Heliotropism, the way sunflowers turn toward the light, can be a powerful metaphor for us and for the young people we’re raising.

In a Petaljet blogpost titled Exploring the Beauty and Meaning of Sunflowers, it’s noted that “[sunflowers] symbolize more than sunshine. They say: I’m still standing. I’m still here. That’s the core of sunflower symbolism: steady, grounded hope. It’s not the fluffy kind, but the kind you earn.” You, and the children in your home, are still standing, too, despite sometimes overwhelming challenges.

This week, take a moment to look at a sunflower–or to turn toward the sun yourself. Take some deep breaths. Feel the breeze on your skin. Let yourself feel rooted in hope.
